Remember Typhoon Sendong which destroyed many lives, washed out homes including schools particularly in Iligan City? To raise funds for the rehabilitation of these schools, an International Humanitarian-sports organization is holding a running event on July 7, 2012 “Schools Run for School Rooms” (SRSR).

The run led by Athletes in Action (AIA) will be participated in by student runners from major universities in Metro Manila, groups from government agencies, private corporations and churches, as well as running enthusiasts.

Last week, a press conference was held at the FILA Store in Robinsons Galleria. The event was graced and hosted by no other than FILA endorser Tim Yap. During the event, Coach Andes announced that 15,000 already registered to join the run. They are counting more student-runner from various universities and colleges in Metro Manila.

About AIA Schools Run for School Rooms

On July 7, Athletes In Action in collaboration with students from University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) member universities and colleges, gears up for Schools Run for School Rooms!

This AIA’s first-ever student-based fun run is for the benefit of the Filipino youth who were worst-hit by Typhoon Sendong in 2011. To be held on July 7, 2012 at the Bonifacio Global City, the 3K, 5K and 10K fun run aims to gather 20,000 runners from rival universities and colleges in Metro Manila and other youth organizations to run together for a common cause – that of rehabilitating classrooms in calamity-stricken communities. It’s a beautiful unifying event for the benefit of our devastated school children.

Proceeds of the event will be used by the AIA to rehabilitate classrooms in Iligan City, the worst-hit places in northeastern Mindanao by Typhoon Sendong in December 2011.

There has always been a lack of classrooms all over the country, and this situation worsened after Sendong,” said Jose Andes, National Director of AIA Philippines. “Through the help of our partners, we hope to build more classrooms, especially in Iligan City.”

“A classroom is the best place to nurture our future leaders, the next generation of God-loving and nationalist Filipinos,” Andes said.

AIA is also partnering with the GMA Kapuso Foundation and iCare Foundation for this project. The GMA Kapuso Foundation will facilitate the rehabilitation of the classrooms.
