SM Hypermarket Supersized Cook-off Feat. Pinoy Sisig

I don’t know why I like sisig when the truth is I don’t eat spicy food and sisig is one of them. Sisig, a dish made from pork’s cheek, nose and ear, some added pork liver. Preparing this dish is quite difficult from washing and cleaning the pork (removing the hair) then cook in boiling water and grilled before chopping into small pieces. Finally, adding some chopped onions, chili peppers, a little soy sauce and vinegar.

Others cook it using iron plate on high heat and stir fried the sisig then served with rice and calamansi for seasoning. I prefer sizzling sisig topped with egg.

The first sisig dish was created in Angeles Pampanga. From then on, the city was recognized by the Department of Tourism as the Sisig Capital of the Philippines in 1974, and during the fiesta, they host the Sisig Festival, which people come from far and wide to see. Angeles has set records for sisig in the city, including the most amount of sisig prepared in a single sizzling plate.

Remember the SM Hypermarket Cooking Marathon? The Cook-off is one of the three components of the SM Hypermarket Master Chefs which began in July 2011. The two other events were a cooking marathon and kitchen makeover. The cooking marathon was made up of weekly cooking demos held in all stores for three months while five lucky families received a kitchen makeovers redesigned and furnished by SM Hypermarket and designed by PSID graduates.

On October 28, Ms. Frances of SM Hypermarket together with foodies went all the way to SM Hypermarket, Mabalacat Pampanga for the Supersized Cook-off with the Theme, The Best Tasting and Largest Serving Sisig. Two winners took home P25,000 Gift Certificate each plus gift packs from SM Hypermarket.

Mabalacat Pampanga, a municipality just five minutes from where the sisig originated, wanted to come together to celebrate the province’s mouthwatering contribution to Filipino culinary culture. Joining them in this endeavor is SM Hypermarket, which features the dish in its first ever Supersized Cook-off. It hopes to make culinary history by assisting Mabalacat in securing its own amazing sisig record, further establishing Pampanga’s reputation as the home of the most mouthwatering pork delicacy in the country.

The Contestants

The competition was open to everyone, they have to present SM Hypermarket receipt worth P500 though. Competing groups are made of five members each pledge to serve a minimum of 50 plates and each plate must weigh 100 grams.

That night, two groups received P25,000 SM Hypermarket Gift Certificate each, plaque of recognition and gift pack from SM Hypermarket – one (1) was declared The Best Tasting Sisig and one(1) The Most Number of Plates Served.
