How To Track Electrical Consumption

When we move in QC last year, slowly we also purchase new furniture and home appliances. I kept the old appliances - Samsung LCD TV, an old refrigerator, a manual washing machine, electric kettle and oven toaster. To be honest, I wanted an upgrade from the old and small refrigerator into a fully automatic, no-frost one. From single tub manual washing machine to fully-automatic washer-dryer. I also want a microwave oven. Well, after several prodding and convincing my loving husband, who has the final say give in to my requests.

We went to SM Appliance center scouting for the new home appliances. While walking, we continue discussing what type of appliances should we get. Of course, quality and functionality is of prime factor but we also consider aesthetic as well. In addition, we choose those that's energy efficient. I've been wanting a brand new fully automatic two-door refrigerator and fully automatic washing machine. We thought that making life easier is by having automatic appliances with high wattage but consumes more energy thus shooting Meralco Bill. We don't like that!

Let's say, if I have a fully-automatic, dependable washing machine then I don't have to spend the whole day doing the laundry. I have more time with hubby or do other things like ironing clothes, cleaning the house or simply relaxing at one corner.  A no-frost refrigerator saves my time waiting for it to defrost before I can finally clean it with soap and water.

We do monthly accounting of all our expenses

Hubby wanted a semi-automatic fridge also with the washer-dryer. I wanted fully-automatic. At the end, my loving husband purchased the items I wanted. Yay, we got Electrolux refrigerator with Adaptive Defrost System and Door alarm that's efficient and energy saving. Fully automatic top load Samsung washer-dryer. Anyway, I would like to share more about these appliances on a separate post. Today, let me help you manage your electricity spending through an app called MeralcO Virtual Engine (MoVE)

MeralcO Virtual Engine (MoVE)

Meralco launched its MeralcO Virtual Engine (MoVE), an iOS and Android-friendly app that allows consumers to have more power over their monthly electric bill. Because many of us are conscious of our electricity usage, Meralco developed this app to make managing consumers’ electricity spending better. One of the key features allows users to compute their power consumption based on their appliances’ cost per hour and length of use per day and week. Moreover, the MoVE app also gives users electricity-saving tips, Meralco news updates, and more.

The app is sooo easy to use. Here's an example...

Let's compute appliance monthly consumption of a Digital Microwave Oven  (20L).

Step 1: Set your monthly bill amount on the space provided.
Step 2: Choose appliance. The app tells you the wattage of your appliance.
Step 3: Place the number of hours/minutes, days used (1-7days) and weeks used (1-4 wks)
Step 4: Calculate. The app shows per hour, per day, per week and your monthly appliance consumption.

Another example, our monthly consumption of a 32'' LCD TV is only P30.99 if we use it for three (3) hours four (4) times a week. Not bad at all, we usually enjoy late night movie marathon.

Moving on, let's see how much consumption using an Automatic 6Kg Washing Machine. Wattage is 527, use 3 hours, three (3 times a week). Monthly consumption is P204.16 or P51 per week. This is better compared to paying laundry services of P50/kg.

The app allows me to manage our electrical consumption in many ways. For us, we usually watch late night but we spend most of the time browsing the internet, we do not deprive ourselves of watching the television. We're trying to live a healthy lifestyle so I also limit the use of microwave oven. As for the laundry, I usually run the washer-dryer every Mondays and Thursdays. I do not throw silk and delicate clothes in it. So, how do you find the MoVE app? Start downloading Meralco MoVe and learn how to manage your energy consumption at home.

Key features of Meralco MoVe App

  • Usage - tracks your electrical consumption in real time, by adding your appliances and switch them on and off in the app as you would use them at home.

To end this post, I would to share one of the funny videos starring comedienne Giselle Sanchez. She plays Madame Giselle, a fortune teller who identifies the electricity-wasting bad habits of each Zodiac sign and gives advice on how the MoVE app can help them. The video is for Zodian signs Leo and Virgo. Watch other videos on YouTube
