Compounded Medications At Apotheca Integrative Pharmacy

Do you know what Compounding Pharmacy is? It may sounds a bit technical, perhaps only medical professionals could understand. For eight years, I worked as a staff nurse in a tertiary military hospital in the Philippines. I also worked as a private duty nurse for three years. Then I became a PDN of my grandma with lung cancer for more than a year. As a nurse, one of our duties is to prepare and administer medication according to doctor's order. It's our responsibility to give medicine at the right dose at the right time to the right patient. That being said, we know how to compute medication and it's hard when we have to administer small dosages.

A couple of days ago, I visited a specialty compounding pharmacy called APOTHECA along Arnaiz avenue in Makati. It's just across El Cielito hotel. Apotheca Integrative Pharmacy has its wellness space that offers a wide variety of products that promotes wellness. Apotheca specializes in custom compounding. Let me give you the definition of "compounding". According to FDA

compounding is a practice in which a licensed pharmacist, a licensed physician, or, in the case of an outsourcing facility, a person under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, combines, mixes, or alters ingredients of a drug to create a medication tailored to the needs of an individual patient. Not all patients need compounded medication but there are special patients who do. There are times that the medication dosage or strength they need are not commercially available. Apotheca pharmacy works with physician to customize medication as needed. They can custom-made medicine turn it into chewies, lollipops (for kids and old patients), transdermal gels as well. They combine medicine into a single dosage form for easier administration.

Apotheca also offers bio-identical and natural hormone replacement therapies, pain, diabetic or special medication - pain gels, creams, ointments, suppositories and veterinary medications. They also compound flavoring suspensions and liquids, converting solid form medication into liquid form for patients with difficulty of swallowing.

Other services they offer includes thyroid medications, weight management programs, sterile IV preparation, pain management, dermatology and autism medication.
