Green Thumb Coalition and Climate Change

Traveling taught me many things in life. It gave opportunity to meet people from different walks of life. I became more conscious of the environment and appreciate it even more. I love talking to our farmers. The people in the community are very warm and friendly. They served fresh, organic food. We had several activities and did not mind the heavy rain.

We discussed a lot of things including ASF or the African Swine Fever. We asked their suggestions and efforts in preventing the spread of ASF. Another major concerns of our farmers is climate change. The good news is that these farms we visited assured us that they are also making efforts to fight climate change. Some of them put-up a water rump pump which prevents soil erosion and save energy. All of them make compost from dry leaves and kitchen scraps.

Prior to my travel to Calabarzon, I was invited by the Green Thumb Coalition to talk about climate change environmental issues in the Philippines. With Rhoda Navarro and Attorney Aaron Pedrosa of SANLAKAS-Green Thumb Coalition, they showed us data on climate change and its effect in our country.

Effects of climate change includes but not limited to rising maximum temperatures, rising sea levels, higher ocean temperatures. It will directly affect us humans and our environment. Rising air temperature directly affects human health. In a recent article published by CNN, the Philippines ranks no. 2 in the most vulnerable countries to climate change.

The Green Thumb Coalition aims to elevate the issues of  biodiversity and ecosystem integrity, climate justice, mining, extractives and mineral resource management, and waste management just to name a few.

Attorney Pedrosa said that a global temperature change beyond 1.5 degrees Celsius can automatically result to 75% of the world’s corals being destroyed. According to Green Thumb Coalition, humans have less than eleven (11) years to stay below the 1.5 deg. threshold.

I am still hopeful that it is not yet too late to work on preventing the massive effect of global warming. Let's plant more trees. Recycling helps reduce greenhouse gas emission. We can also help spread awareness and educate people on energy shortage. Solar panels can help save thousands of megawatts of electricity.

Climate change is real and it's happening now. It's an issue that needs to be taken seriously. What are your thoughts about global warming?
