Lunch Date at Crystal Jade, Shanghai Delight

My 35th birthday was spent in a simple family dinner at Crystal Jade Dining In, a Chinese restaurant located at Hight Street in BGC. As a satisfied customer, I was looking forward having lunch at the other branch. So, just before the year ends, we finally visited the one located in Greenhills, the Crystal Jade Shanghai Delight.

What's good in these two branches is that, they have a different set of menu. Shanghai Delight is famous with their Xiao Long Bao and the new addition, Multi-flavoured Xiao Long Bao in their menu.

Sometime in December, Jonel and I visited Crystal Jade Shanghai Delight. We were delighted with the vibrant purple banner outside and a modern, chic feel inside after its major renovation. It offers Lanzhou La Mian and Shanghai favourites. On the other hand, the Crystal Jade Dining In in BGC is famous with its Cantonese barbecue meat, noodles and congee and my favorite pastry, the Baked Bo Lo BBQ Pork Bun.

Ah, you'll not find it here at Shanghai Delight, likewise you'll not find Xiao Long Bao at CJ Dining In. So, if you're craving for either Xiao Long Bao or Baked Bo Lo Bun, you know where to go!

Here's a rundown of savory dishes served to us on a cold Thursday morning. Starting with their latest addition, Multi-Flavored Xiao Long Bao (PHP 229 / 5pcs)

Multi-Flavored Xiao Long Bao (PHP 229 / 5pcs)

The famous soup-filled Xiao Long Bao now comes in five (5) scrumptious flavors - Cheese, Spicy Beef, Vegetable and Dried Beancurd, Shrimp and Spicy Chicken Xiao Long Bao. My favorite among the five is the cheese flavor followed by vegetable. Surprisingly the spicy chicken went 3rd on my list. The spiciness is not that irritating to the mouth. All five flavors offers a light yet savory liquid soup with juicy meat in a cute swirled bun. You must sup it carefully or you might burn your mouth.

Eating Xiao Long Bao is not the same with other dumplings that you just have to place the whole thing in your mouth. They say, there's an art in eating this traditional Chinese dumpling. For first timers, here's a step-by-step way of savoring hot Xiao Long Bao.

  1. Pour some black vinegar to the shredded ginger.
  2. Using a chopstick, gently pick up a Xiao Long Bao making sure that you don’t break the skin. If you're not comfortable using chopstick, you may use your hands or support the Xiao Long Bao using a soup spoon.
  3. Gently dip the Xiao Long Bao in the ginger vinegar sauce.
  4. Lift it up and place it on the spoon.
  5. Sup the soup inside the Xiao Long Bao and savor the rich flavorful broth inside the dumpling.
  6. You may add more ginger and vinegar to it and eat the whole Xiao Long Bao.

Are we done yet? well, we're just about to start. These pretty colorful dumplings are not the only the star in the line-up of appetizer. Shanghai Delight's Deep-fried Crispy Beef with Sesame (PHP 328) and Deep-fried Mushroom in Salt & Pepper are fantastic and so delicious you'll finish up to the last piece. Husband and I gave two thumbs up on the deep-fried mushroom!

The Fried Mixed Rice in Hot Stone Pot (PHP 348) is a meal by itself.

The richness of Mango Cream with Sago & Pomelo (PHP 130) reminded me of the decadent avocado pudding and Pomelo we had at Crystal Jade Dining In. Both, actually looks almost the same in terms of presentation. They were both good and pleasing to the mouth, too!

We also had the Glutinous Rice Dumpling with Taro.
