Food That Heals: Camote Tops For Dengue Fever

Many foods also contain an abundance of microscopic healing substances known as phytonutrients. One example is Camote tops, my favorite ingredient in cooking fish sinigang especially for sinigang na bangus. My dad loves camote both the leaves and the sweet camote. We boil talbos ng kamote and serve with bagoong and calamansi.

Sweet Potatoes (camote) are packed with antioxidants. It helps preserve memory, control diabetes and reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer.

Sweet potatoes are filling. It's rich in complex carbohydrates and low in calories. The fiber in camote helps in controlling weight and weight-related condition such as diabetes. It also helps lower blood sugar levels by slowing the rate at which food is converted into glucose and absorbed into the blood stream.

Camote is also rich in beta-carotene. A 4-ounce serving will provide more than 14 milligrams of beta-carotene. With that you get the nutrient you need in fighting cancer and heart disease. Beta-carotene helps protect the body from harmful free-radicals. Camote is also rich in vitamins C, E and B vitamins folate and B6.

We've been hearing a lot of news regarding the significant increase of dengue fever. What do you do to prevent dengue in your place?

Camote Tops Can Cure Dengue Fever?

I've heard several stories of healing with camote tops in cases of dengue fever.

Camote has complex carbohydrates, protein, vitamins A and C, iron and calcium. Dengue fever or yellow fever is caused by a virus   transmitted to human being through mosquito bite. Signs and symptoms of Dengue Fever includes sudden high fever, body pains, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, and skin rash which usually appears on the 4th or 5th day after the onset of fever.

As mentioned earlier Dengue Fever is a viral disease so antibiotic is not usually given to patient. The treatment for dengue and other viral disease is supportive. For example, you treat fever by giving antipyretic medicine, rest, increase fluid intake and tepid or sponge bath.

However, complications of dengue fever should be closely monitored. It includes bleeding, enlargement of the liver and circulatory failure. They are all life-threatening and should be addressed immediately by bringing the sick to the hospital. Patient's blood levels are monitored especially her/his platelet count drops (normal range is for adult platelet count is about 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter).

Camote which is rich in antioxidant, complex carbohydrates, protein, vitamins A and C, iron and calcium is said to help fight stress and improve the immune system such in the case of dengue fever. The camote tops of talbos ng kamote with its antioxidant helps fights stress and boost the immune system. We've heard stories about the healing benefits of sweet potatoes in dengue fever. Camote tops are boiled in water for five minutes, cooled and the juice is given to patient. He/she can also eat the leaves as well, you can make a salad or add in sinigang.

Although there's no strong evidence yet about the healing benefits of camote tops in dengue fever, I think there's nothing wrong in trying. Besides camote tops are cheap, easy to find, edible and safe to eat. We've been eating it for many years. It's abundant in the market and easily grow in our backyard. Talbos ng Kamote is highly nutritious and delicious too.

At home, I also make camote-tanglad (lemongrass)-calamansi juice. It's very refreshing especially during the summer days. It was in the organic farms where I first tried this healthy drink.

There's no harm in trying if camote tops can really help patients with dengue fever. I still recommend seeking doctor's advise for any health problems. Do not ignore fever, remember that it is an early sign of infection. While on treatment, it is also best to boost immune system. Have you tried making camote juice at home? Share your experience.
